Culture

Nashville is a thriving city that is now known for so much more than the home of country music. All of America is becoming aware of what a great city it is. Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine recently ranked Nashville 1st on its list of 50 Smart Cities. The survey ranks America’s cities on the basis of affordability and livability, weighing housing prices and economic vitality with lifestyle factors such as public education, health care, the local arts scene and recreational facilities. The honor came as no surprise to long-time residents; it was only surprising that it took the rest of America so long to discover how great Nashville is. Other recent recognition for the city of Nashville includes the Preserve America Community Neighborhood award. The city was honored in ceremonies in Washington D.C. by First Lady Laura Bush for creatively maintaining the historic nature of downtown Nashville while looking forward.

History

Nashville was founded in 1780 on the site of a natural sulfur spring and salt lick called French Lick. The original name for the settlement was Fort Nashborough. It quickly grew due to its prime location, accessibility as a river port and status as a major railroad center. In 1806, Nashville was incorporated as a city and became the county seat of Davidson County. In 1843, the city was named the permanent capital of the state of Tennessee.

Amenities

Today, Nashville is renowned as a music recording center and tourist destination, but its largest industry is actually health care. Nashville is home to more than 250 health care companies, including Hospital Corporation of America, the largest private operator of hospitals in the world. As of 2006, it is estimated that the health care industry contributes $18.3 billion a year and 94,000 jobs to the Nashville-area economy. Other major industries in the vital Nashville economy are publishing and transportation. The many Universities in town also play a major role in life here. Vanderbilt is the most well known, with a tremendous national reputation as one of the great Universities in the country, but there are many other excellent institutions in town.

Museums

Popular destinations include Fort Nashborough, a reconstruction of the original settlement; the Tennessee State Museum, and The Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
